چکیده

In this study the acoustic and articulatory variabilities of speakers with different palate shapes were compared. Since the cross-sectional area of the vocal tract changes less for a slight change in tongue position if the palate is domeshaped than if it is flat, the acoustic variability should be greater for flat palates than for domeshaped ones. Consequently, it can be hypothesized that speakers with flat palates should reduce their articulatory variability in order to keep the acoustic output constant. This hypothesis was tested on 32 speakers recorded via electropalatography (EPG) and acoustics. The articulatory and acoustic variability of some of their vowels and /j/ was measured. Indeed, the results show that the speakers with flat palates reduce their variability in tongue height. There is no such trend in acoustic variability.

The influence of the palate shape on articulatory token-to-token variability

Articulatory token-to-token variability not only depends on linguistic aspects like the phoneme inventory of a given language but also on speaker specific morphological and motor constraints. As has been noted previously (Perkell (1997), Mooshammer et al. (2004)) , speakers with coronally high ”domeshaped” palates exhibit more articulatory variability than speakers with coronally low ”flat” pal...

Differences in the relationship between palate shape, articulation, and acoustics of American English /r/ and /s/

This ultrasound and acoustics study of American English /r/ and /s/ investigates whether variability in production is related to individual differences in vocal tract morphology, namely the shape of the palate.1 There was reduced articulatory variability for flatter palates for both /r/ and /s/. There was a relationship between acoustics and palate shape for /s/ only, where flatter palates had ...

Modeling the effect of palate shape on the articulatory-acoustics mapping

Previous research [1, 2] shows that articulatory variability is reduced for people with flatter palates. It has been hypothesized [1] that this is because the mapping between articulation and acoustics is more linear for flatter than for more domed palates. A combination of two synthesizers were used to model how vocal tract anatomy influences the mapping of articulation onto acoustics, using A...

Automatic Classification of Palatal and Pharyngeal Wall Shape Categories from Speech Acoustics and Inverted Articulatory Signals

Inter-speaker variability is pervasive in speech, and the ability to predict sources of inter-speaker variability from acoustics can afford scientific and technological advantages. An important source of this variability is vocal tract morphology. This work proposes a statistical model-based approach to classifying the shape of the hard palate and the pharyngeal wall from speech audio. We used ...

Articulatory compensation and adaptation for unexpected palate shape perturbation

This paper describes compensatory articulatory behavior in response to an unexpected perturbation of the oral cavity. An artificial palate, whose thickness can be changed during speech, was constructed to provide downward (increase of thickness) and upward (decrease of thickness) perturbation on the palate shape. The compensatory articulation during the utterance of repeated syllables, which co...
